United Airlines Passenger Says Employee Threatened to Call ICE During Ticket Dispute at SFO
United is investigating a viral video that shows an employee threatening to call ICE during a three-hour ticket dispute, the airline said.
- On July 14, a United Airlines employee threatened to call immigration authorities on Julio Varela, a Mexican American citizen, during a ticketing dispute at San Francisco International Airport, captured in a now-viral video.
- Attempting to fix a booking error, Varela and his family spent three hours shuttling between counters; a United worker intervened as an Air Canada agent neared resolution.
- During the confrontation, the employee stated, "Maybe we should call ICE on you," and Varela alleges the worker assaulted him while recording the incident on her phone.
- The IAM Union stated the employee's comments "do not reflect the views or values" of the organization, while United Airlines said it is "looking into the interaction."
- Returning from Montreal on Saturday, Varela expressed fears of detainment at SFO, stating, "I don't know what's gonna happen when I get back.
