United Airlines Eclipses American With Huge Buildup At Chicago O’Hare

United Airlines will increase daily flights by 170 at O'Hare, serving 222 nonstop destinations to strengthen its hub and challenge American Airlines, officials said.

  • On Jan. 27, 2026, United Airlines announced plans to fly a record 750 daily departures from Chicago O'Hare International Airport in summer 2026.
  • Facing American Airlines’ buildup and recent gate wins at Chicago O'Hare, Scott Kirby, United CEO, vowed to add flights to keep gate counts, saying United made about $500 million at ORD in 2025.
  • Starting May 7, United will operate five Midwest routes, including Champaign‑Urbana and La Crosse, each with four daily roundtrips on regional jets, as part of its expansion.
  • By summer, United's Chicago hub will become the world’s third largest single-airline hub with about 950 daily departures, adding 170 more than in 2025 and hiring 2,500 at ORD.
  • United will also operate summer service from ORD to Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Guadalajara International Airport between June 8th and June 27th, adding nonstop access to all 16 tournament host cities.
