Strike notice served by union representing Alberta nursing care staff

More than 16,000 Alberta licensed practical nurses and health-care aides will picket after mediation failed, with 98% voting in favor of strike action, union says.

  • On Wednesday, Alberta Union of Provincial Employees served strike notice just before 8 a.m., saying mediation failed, and more than 16,000 licensed practical nurses and health‑care aides will begin picketing Saturday, Nov. 22.
  • After almost 20 months of bargaining, talks between AUPE and Alberta Health Services broke down in April over wages and work conditions, with unsuccessful mediation.
  • Members delivered a near-unanimous strike vote with about 98 per cent in favour, and about 3,500 workers will walk off in rotating pickets starting Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
  • The province said a fair deal was offered and Horner stated `We are disappointed to hear the AUPE has provided official notice of their intent to strike on Saturday morning`, while AHS has contingency plans in place.
  • AUPE wants the government and employer back at the bargaining table; Robinson said the remaining nine per cent wage gap and proposals raising it to $20 with market adjustments of two per cent for aides and 9.5 per cent for LPNs underscore their demand for an improved mandate.
