Stellantis Workers to Vote on Whether to Authorize Strike, if Talks Break Down
The vote will let more than 9,000 members decide whether Unifor can call a strike if talks with Stellantis fail.
Unifor National President Lana Payne announced a strike authorization vote for Stellantis Canada members after weeks of bargaining with CEO Trevor Longley reached an impasse over job security and the company's planned sale of its Brampton Assembly Plant.
Contract negotiations began September 1, but Unifor paused talks on September 11 after Stellantis announced a memorandum of understanding to sell the Brampton Assembly Plant to defence contractor Roshel.
Unifor represents more than 9,000 Stellantis workers across Canada, including 6,000 employees at the Windsor Assembly Plant, where potential strike leverage could disrupt minivan production and parts operations.
The Master Bargaining Committee stated that "strike action remains a last resort, but the ability to strike is an important part of collective bargaining" to reach an agreement.
Members will cast strike authorization ballots on October 17 and 18, with Unifor expecting to announce results on October 19, though a majority vote does not automatically trigger a walkout.
