UND wins its seventh Penrose Cup as NCHC champions

North Dakota claimed its seventh Penrose Cup after a major offseason rebuild, with freshmen scoring four goals in a 5-3 win over Western Michigan, NCHC commissioner said.

  • On Friday, North Dakota clinched the Penrose Cup with a 5-3 win at Lawson Ice Arena, Kalamazoo, Mich., and celebrated in the locker room.
  • Led by a late-season surge and a roster rebuilt with 15 new players, North Dakota needed just one point to secure the Penrose Cup, as Dane Jackson said, 'They slowly built a roster through recruiting and the transfer portal.'
  • Backing the scoring, Jan Spunar, UND goaltender, stopped 22 of 25 shots, and Mac Swanson scored with 20.7 seconds left to clinch the win.
  • The win secured UND the NCHC's No. 1 seed for the conference tournament and the Penrose Cup will return to Grand Forks, N.D. after Saturday night's series finale.
  • Off the ice, UND players showed chemistry, with Strinden saying 'To be honest, we're just kind of a bunch of idiots' and Jackson noting 'It never gets old.
