Mozambique: Nearly 100,000 Displaced as Violence Spreads Across Northern Mozambique, Says UN

Nearly 100,000 people displaced in two weeks as attacks spread beyond Cabo Delgado, overwhelming host communities and straining humanitarian resources, UNHCR says.

  • On Dec. 2, UNHCR's Mozambique Representative Xavier Creach said close to 100,000 people were displaced in the past fortnight as attacks spread beyond Cabo Delgado into Nampula Province.
  • Mozambican authorities trace the insurgency to 2017, which began in Cabo Delgado and has displaced over 1.3 million people as armed groups storm villages, burning homes and attacking northern communities.
  • Schools and churches are crowded with newly arrived displaced families, many sleeping in the open; children arrive exhausted and malnourished, while communal shelters expose them to `new risks of sexual and gender violence`.
  • UNHCR is calling for urgent international support and says it will need close to 40 million dollars next year amid funding at 50 percent of requirements.
  • This is the fourth massive influx in recent months, putting huge pressure on already fragile host communities in northern Mozambique and forcing some displaced people to return to unsafe areas.
