UN says 53 civilians killed during 3 days of attacks in and near el-Fasher camp in western Sudan

  • On Saturday, a drone and artillery attack killed at least 60 people at the Dar al-Arqam displacement centre on university grounds in El-Fasher.
  • The RSF has been fighting the Sudanese regular army since April 2023, focusing on seizing El-Fasher, the last major Darfur city under army control, to consolidate regional power.
  • Local committees said the assault used two drones and eight artillery shells, and observers called the barrage one of the deadliest since the El-Fasher siege nearly 18 months ago.
  • The resistance committee called the incident a 'massacre,' with bodies trapped underground, while UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said he was 'appalled' by the killings and attacks on civilians and civilian objects.
  • El-Fasher, home to 400,000 trapped civilians, has run out of nearly everything as the conflict pushes nearly 25 million Sudanese into acute hunger and the UN estimates 80% cannot access medical care.
