On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted a political declaration that could redefine the global fight against HIV/AIDS. By 149 votes to 8, with 14 abstentions, the Member States reaffirmed their commitment to make AIDS a disease of the past by the end of the decade.
The United Nations High-level Meeting on HIV/AIDS had concluded with the adoption by a majority of member States of a new Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS, which reaffirmed the commitment to ending AIDS as a threat to public health by 2030 and set new targets to accelerate progress towards that goal.
