United Nations (UN) experts expressed deep concern on Monday about allegations of prolonged incommunicado detention and appalling prison conditions in Belarus that may amount to torture.
UN experts deplore, in a press release issued on Monday, 20 April 2026, the "extended solitary confinement" and the "corporal punishment" reportedly taking place in prison colony No. 1, in northern Belarus, where several political opponents are being held.
The UN Group of Independent Experts on Human Rights in Belarus has strongly condemned the decision of the Belarusian authorities to invalidate the passports of former political prisoners who were forcibly expelled from the country.
UN experts have expressed grave concern over the "deeply appalling" conditions in the penal colony in Novopolotsk, northern Belarus. Andrzej Poczobut, a journalist, correspondent for "Gazeta Wyborcza," and activist with the Union of Poles in Belarus, has been held there since 2023.
