UN Agency Begins Clearing Huge Gaza City Waste Dump
The United Nations Development Programme is relocating over 300,000 cubic meters of wartime waste from Gaza City's Fras Market to a new environmentally compliant site to reduce health risks.
- UNDP's Gaza office said work has started to remove the solid-waste mound that has overtaken Fras Market, which has been buried under rubbish for more than a year.
- After municipal crews were blocked from reaching the Juhr al-Dik landfill, the Gaza Municipality reported about 350,000 cubic metres of rubbish accumulated with only 10 to 12 temporary dump sites accessible.
- UNDP plans a six-month transfer to a prepared temporary site in the Abu Jarad area, covering 75,000 square metres, with funding from the Humanitarian Fund and the European Union’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations.
- UNDP and local figures warn the cleanup is vital to prevent further health and environmental risks, as residents who sifted through the rubbish expressed relief, officials said.
- With Juhr al-Dik under full Israeli control, waste will move to a transitional site near the former Netzarim settlement until Israeli forces withdraw and access is restored, symbolizing the war's toll on Gaza.
