UK's Starmer says he is focused on doing his job as PM
Starmer says he will fight any challenge as nearly a quarter of Labour MPs back calls for him to go after poor election results.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer rejected calls to resign on Monday, telling staff at Labour Party headquarters he remains "focused on the job that I was asked to do."
Labour's heavy losses in the May 7 elections triggered nearly a quarter of MPs to call for Starmer to go, while two rivals openly vie to replace him.
Any candidate wishing to challenge would need support from 20 per cent of Labour MPs; with Labour holding 403 seats, that equates to 81 backers.
Lawmaker Wes Streeting said on Saturday he would stand in any formal leadership contest, while Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is seeking a parliamentary seat to challenge.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy confirmed Starmer would not set a departure timetable, as investors have pushed up government borrowing costs amid the leadership uncertainty.
