A New UK Porn Ban Sparks Fears of Unprecedented Sex Censorship
The law targets violent and incest-themed porn, with penalties of up to 5 years in prison and retroactive deletion requirements, officials said.
Starting Friday, England and Wales will criminalize possession or publication of pornography depicting strangulation, certain incestuous relationships, and adults pretending to be children, with penalties up to five years imprisonment.
Conservative peer Baroness Gabby Bertin's 2025 review prompted the legislation, arguing that strangulation had become "totally normalised" in porn; officials claim these laws will prevent normalisation of violence against women and girls.
The ban applies to realistic AI-generated images and material already online, requiring users to delete prohibited content before Friday; the Ministry of Justice clarified the law applies to depictions a "reasonable person" would believe appear real.
Labour MP Jessica Asato faced ridicule this week after suggesting the law might restrict oral sex depictions, though critics argued her comments mischaracterized the legislation and confused it with HPV research.
Under the U.K.'s Online Safety Act, platforms must prevent users from encountering prohibited material; Ofcom can impose fines up to £18 million or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue for compliance breaches.
