IFM Investors Fund to Acquire Majority Stake in Associated British Ports
The deal would give IFM control of 64% of Associated British Ports, which handles about a quarter of the UK’s seaborne trade.
The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System agreed on Wednesday to sell their 64 percent stake in Associated British Ports to IFM Investors for approximately $13.4 billion.
Formed during the 1980s privatization era, ABP is Britain's largest port operator with 19 ports in England, Scotland and Wales; CPP Investments and OMERS acquired their respective stakes in 2015 and 2006.
IFM, a global manager overseeing more than $100 billion in infrastructure equity and debt, emerged as the winning bidder, citing ABP's strategic position serving key industrial regions like Southampton, Humber, and South Wales.
James Bryce, Managing Director and Head of Infrastructure at CPP Investments, described the sale as an opportunity to recycle capital, while Associated British Ports CEO Henrik L. Pedersen called the IFM investment a "powerful endorsement of our business, our people, and our strategy."
Logistics infrastructure has become a sought-after investment, with firms recently competing for similar assets; the deal ranks as one of the largest in Britain this year, demonstrating sustained demand for critical trade hubs.
