Ukrainian drones hit Russia's biggest data centre

Sberbank said its systems remained normal after the strike, while regional officials reported fires, damaged homes and at least one death.

  • On Wednesday, Ukrainian drones struck a major Sberbank data center in Balakovo, Saratov region. Ukrainian defense manufacturer Fire Point confirmed the operation, with OSINT monitoring group Exilenova reporting explosions beginning at approximately 4 a.m.
  • This strike follows three similar drone attacks on Yandex data centers in Ryazan and Vladimir over the past week, establishing a clear pattern of Ukrainian operations targeting Russian digital infrastructure.
  • The targeted complex, valued at more than $1 billion, is part of a major data center project. Reports indicate the attack also struck a nearby transport terminal and the industrial zone of the MZ Balakovo steel plant.
  • Sberbank First Deputy CEO Alexander Vedyakhin claimed "all of Sberbank's systems and services are operating normally," yet reports indicated more than 80 services were affected. Saratov Governor Roman Busargin confirmed one person was killed.
  • Designed to host approximately 3,000 server racks and up to 120,000 servers, the facility supports Russia's state-backed GosTech platform and is scheduled to host Russia's biggest supercomputer by 2027.
