Ukraine's Court Sentences 20-Year-Old Man to Life Imprisonment for Killing Ex-Lawmaker Iryna Farion
Lviv's Shevchenkivskyi District Court sentenced Viacheslav Zinchenko to life imprisonment today for the murder of linguist Iryna Farion, concluding the court proceedings.
On July 19, 2024, an unknown assailant shot Iryna Farion on Masaryk Street in Lviv; on July 26, the Halytskyi District Court remanded the 18-year-old resident of Dnipro, Viacheslav Zinchenko, into custody without bail.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated investigators considered multiple motives, including personal animosity and Farion's political activities. Doctors operated on Farion following the shooting but were unable to save her life.
Throughout the trial, Zinchenko denied his guilt and refused to testify four times. In March, the defendant initiated a hunger strike, citing the disappearance of exercise equipment—"wall bars"—at the pretrial detention centre.
President Zelenskyy announced the arrest of a suspect on July 25, 2024. Following the reclassification of the case, today's sentencing by the Shevchenkivskyi District Court concludes the proceedings.
Zinchenko acted on his own motion on the basis of his personal convictions and, in particular, on the basis of his hostile attitude towards the social activities of Firion.
Twenty-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko was sentenced to life in prison by a court in Lviv on Thursday for the murder of former Ukrainian MP and linguist Iryna Farionova. He allegedly saw her as someone who was dividing national unity. Zinchenko will have to pay 5 million hryvnia (2.4 million crowns) in compensation to Sofia Osobova, the murdered woman's daughter.
