Ukraine Cuts Ties with Nicaragua over Occupied Territories Recognition
Ukraine's move ends ties with Nicaragua after its unprecedented recognition of Russian control over four Ukrainian regions, marking a firm stance against territorial violations.
- On October 1, Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nicaragua, calling it a `gross violation of the UN Charter and fundamental norms of international law`, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.
- Nicaragua's government formally recognised Crimea and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson as Russian territory after co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo wrote to Vladimir Putin expressing `full support and recognition`.
- Russian officials quoted by TASS reported trade between Nicaragua and Russia surged 70% in 2023 and grew 79% in early 2024, while Laureano Ortega Murillo gained authority to negotiate with occupied territories.
- Ukraine said the move eliminates its diplomatic representation through its embassy in Mexico and consular services via Havana, and Andrii Sybiha warned that `Ukraine will continue to react as harshly as possible in response to any attempts to encroach on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.`
- Nicaragua's move leaves it the first UN member to back the annexation, building on Cold War-era ties and making it a pivotal hub for Russian Federation activity in the region.
