Ukraine says some Russian missiles fly near Chornobyl, risking major accident

Ukraine says 92 drones and 35 Kinzhal missiles have flown near nuclear sites since July 2024, raising the risk of a major accident.

  • On Wednesday, April 22, Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko warned that repeated Russian missile and drone flights near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant are elevating the risk of a major nuclear accident.
  • Russian forces are likely using the Chernobyl facility as an attack route for drones to bypass dense Ukrainian air defense coverage, according to Kravchenko.
  • Since July 2024, Ukrainian radars have tracked at least 92 drones within a 5 km radius of the plant, while 35 hypersonic Kinzhal missiles have also flown near the site.
  • "Such launches cannot be explained by any military considerations," Kravchenko said, characterizing the flights as "intimidation and terror" showing "complete disregard" for civilian safety throughout Europe.
  • As Ukraine prepares to mark Sunday's 40th anniversary of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has repeatedly expressed "deep concern" about military activities near nuclear facilities.
