Ukraine sanctions 5 Chinese firms for supplying components used in Russian drones
CHINA, JUL 8 – Ukraine targets five Chinese firms supplying drone parts used in Russian attacks, aiming to cut off Russia's ability to produce up to 10,000 drones monthly, officials said.
- On July 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed an order sanctioning five Chinese-registered companies for supplying parts used in Russian Shahed-type drones that attacked Kyiv on July 4.
- These sanctions follow Ukraine's Security Service recovering Chinese-made drone components during the July 4 air assault and reflect concerns about China's role in sustaining Russia's drone production despite Beijing's declared neutrality.
- Ukrainian authorities report that the vast majority of components used in Russian drones are sourced from China, highlighting Aero-HIT as a prominent Russian manufacturer that depends extensively on Chinese parts and technical assistance to produce thousands of drones each month.
- Zelenskyy emphasized that drones are affordable and highly efficient, being deployed regularly in roles similar to artillery, while former deputy head Pavlo Palisa noted that these unmanned systems are responsible for inflicting 80 percent of the damage on Russian forces, underscoring their significant strategic role in the conflict.
- Ukraine is ramping up its own drone development with interceptor drones and AI-assisted targeting to counter growing Russian unmanned capabilities, and Zelenskyy called for increased global support to maintain Ukraine's technological edge.
