Ukraine hits Russia-controlled Crimea in deadly drone attack

Russian-backed authorities said the ban follows drone strikes that killed 5 people and wounded 28, as fuel shortages deepen on the peninsula.

  • On Monday, Russian-appointed Governor Sergei Aksyonov suspended all children's vacation groups and tourism-related events in Crimea until Sept. 1, citing public security as the peninsula faces acute fuel shortages and intensifying Ukrainian attacks.
  • Between Saturday night and Sunday morning, Ukraine launched a major assault targeting military and energy infrastructure, killing four people and causing widespread network damage that disrupted fuel supply routes across the peninsula.
  • Fuel stations in Crimea halted all sales to individuals and businesses on Sunday, while Russia lost about 25% of gasoline output last week, industry sources said; the drop amounts to some 90,000 metric tons per day.
  • Authorities in regions including Lipetsk, Rostov, and Tatarstan have reported similar fuel supply disruptions, while Moscow authorities claim the capital remains normal; shortages have emerged across the European part of Russia and eastern Siberia.
  • Kyiv has targeted Russian energy infrastructure to deprive the Kremlin of revenues financing the war; unplanned refinery maintenance from repeated drone attacks caused a 15% drop in seaborne oil products exports to about 3.3 million metric tons.
