UK spending half an hour longer online than in pandemic, says Ofcom
Alphabet and Meta services account for over half of UK adults' online time, with YouTube reaching 94% of users and capturing significant advertising revenue, Ofcom reports.
- Ofcom said adults spend an average of four and a half hours online daily, up 10 minutes from last year, while Britons watched YouTube for 51 minutes a day.
- The growing popularity of YouTube shows traditional linear broadcasters are losing audience share as services from Alphabet and Meta constituted over half of all online time, Ofcom said.
- YouTube reached 94% of adult internet users in May 2025, ahead of Google Search at 82%, and Meta's apps reached over 90%, with about 60% of UK ad spend in 2024, Ofcom reports.
- Former ITV chairman Peter Bazalgette said regulators needed to redefine the ad market to include digital competitors as Sky, pay-TV group owned by Comcast, last month entered talks to buy ITV, Britain's biggest free-to-air commercial broadcaster.
- Britons spent an average of four and a half hours online daily, a 10-minute rise from last year, while Meta's Facebook and Messenger engaged 93% of online adults and WhatsApp 90%.
