UK set for highs of 27C towards bank holiday weekend
The Met Office says high pressure could bring fine, dry weather and 19 English counties may see 25C or above.
Britain could experience a mini heatwave during the Whitsun Bank Holiday Weekend as long-range forecasts indicate temperatures will rise significantly under a building high-pressure system.
Met Office weather expert Alex Burkill explained that computer models vary regarding the high-pressure system's exact position, which dictates whether the UK experiences warmth or chilly northerly winds.
Maps suggest temperatures could reach 27C in London by Monday May, with 18 counties across England potentially seeing 24C or above throughout the extended weekend.
The Met Office defines an official heatwave as temperatures meeting or exceeding local thresholds for three consecutive days, so a single day of 24C might not qualify.
While high pressure will bring "fine and dry conditions" to many through May 20 to 29, low pressure to the north may occasionally allow rain or showers.
