UK Royal Navy sailor appears in court charged under National Security Act
Prosecutors say Teddy Young obtained protected information and showed interest in a Russian intelligence website, with trial set for October 2027.
On Friday, 24-year-old Royal Navy sailor Teddy Young appeared at London's Old Bailey, facing charges under the National Security Act for allegedly collecting secret information linked to Russia's foreign intelligence service.
Prosecutors allege Young 'obtained, copied, recorded or retained protected information' between November 2024 and May 2025 during his role involving warfare intelligence operations.
Prosecutor Kelly Brocklehurst alleged Young was 'interested in a website set up by a foreign intelligence service,' specifically identifying it as Russia's SVR foreign intelligence agency.
Young appeared by video link from Belmarsh prison and was not asked to enter any pleas; his trial is provisionally scheduled to begin in October 2027.
Police clarified the National Security Act charges are not connected to the separate ongoing investigation into an incident at the RAF Fairford airbase, where US bombers had conducted strikes on Iran.
