All the Schools Closed as Worcestershire Prepares for Hottest Day of Heatwave
Schools are closing early or changing routines as forecasters warn temperatures could reach 40°C and parents raise money for cooling equipment.
More than 1,000 schools across the UK closed or shortened hours on Thursday as the Met Office issued a rare red extreme heat warning covering parts of England and Wales.
Driven by a 'heat-dome' over Western Europe, forecasters warned temperatures could hit 40°C, prompting at least 578 schools in England and more than 500 in Wales to confirm full or partial closures.
Parent groups raised more than £3,500 in 16 hours for air conditioning units and fans, while Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson urged parents to send children to school, warning "every day of absence and lesson missed has a cost."
More than 11,500 people signed a petition demanding a maximum classroom temperature, though critics argued the closures leave young people unprepared, with some commentators calling the reaction "pathetic."
The red extreme heat warning expires at 11:59pm today, though an amber warning extends across eastern and central England into Saturday; most schools expect to reopen on Friday, June 26, or by Monday, June 29, 2026.
