UK government sets out $800 million of AI security funding
OpenAI and Anthropic will provide up to £200 million in model credits as Britain expands AI defenses against biological and cyber threats.
On Saturday, the British government announced a £600 million funding package to defend against AI-driven threats, establishing a 'world first' AI Biosecurity Lab to develop medical countermeasures against emerging pathogens.
Growing concerns over AI safety escalated after recent security incidents involving OpenAI and Anthropic models, prompting officials to protect critical infrastructure from cyber, biological, and emerging AI-enabled threats.
OpenAI and Anthropic are providing up to £200 million in model credits to the biosecurity initiative, while the Treasury allocated £120 million to the AI Security Institute and £130 million to the National Cyber Shield and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre.
AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called the lab a 'major new global institution,' while Chancellor John Healey said the package delivers a 'distinctively British approach' to technology acknowledging working people's concerns.
Projections indicate the move could create more than 100,000 jobs by 2028-29, though opposition critics dismissed the plan as a 'shopping list of projects' while business leaders welcomed the focus on resilience.
The British government announced an investment of £100 million to boost a biosafety laboratory with AI, in collaboration with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind. The initiative seeks to expand the work of evaluation of advanced models already developed by the AI Security Institute of the United Kingdom.
