UK energy supplier to give away free electricity during this week's solar eclipse
Customers in Octoplus and Savings Sessions can earn one hour of free electricity by cutting use during the eclipse peak, Octopus Energy said.
- Octopus Energy is offering free electricity to customers who reduce energy use during Wednesday's solar eclipse, when Britain's solar generation will plummet as over 90% of the sun is obscured.
- Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief customer officer at Octopus Energy, said, "By shifting everyday tasks like the washing machine or dishwasher until later, households can help reduce the need for gas power stations – and earn rewards for doing their bit."
- Customers signed up to Octoplus and Savings Sessions can qualify for one hour of free electricity on Sunday, August 16, provided they reduce usage between 6pm and 8pm on eclipse day.
- Octopus is hosting an OctoEclipse competition offering free solar panels or £12,000 in cash, with entries submitted via Instagram, Facebook, or Bluesky using the hashtag #OctoEclipse.
- Official advice warns that ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection for viewing the eclipse; "never use regular sunglasses to look at the Sun during an eclipse." Certified eclipse glasses are required.
