UK E-Bike Fires Rise 38% in 2025, FOI Data Shows

Fire brigades said faulty batteries, chargers and conversion kits drove the rise, while online marketplaces face new scrutiny over unsafe products.

  • E-Bike and e-scooter fires reached a record high in 2025, with 432 e-bike blazes recorded across the UK. New figures from The Press Association show London Fire Brigade documented the highest number of incidents.
  • Lesley Rudd, chief executive of Electrical Safety First, warned the issue is "swiftly becoming a runaway train that needs to be stopped." Poorly made batteries sold via under-regulated online marketplaces are a major route for dangerous devices.
  • There were 147 e-scooter fires last year, representing a 20% jump from 123 in 2024. Nottinghamshire recorded 30 e-bike fires outside London, followed by Greater Manchester with 13 and Avon Fire and Rescue Service with 10.
  • Last week, the Government published three consultations setting out plans to boost product safety in the UK. Online marketplaces face legal requirements to "prevent, identify and remove dangerous products being sold via their platforms."
  • Nick Bailey from BatteryIQ noted fires involve "always cut-price products" manufactured with lax quality control. London Fire Brigade deputy commissioner Spencer Sutcliff said he remains "extremely concerned" about the worrying amount of cases in the capital.
