UK drivers told to ignore these sat nav directions after 'worrying' rise in deaths
Urging drivers to disregard sat nav directions that reroute them onto rural roads, IAM RoadSmart advises questioning if saving a few minutes is truly worth the increased hazards of unclassified or single-track routes.
Bypassing congestion on major A-roads, 54% of 1,042 surveyed motorists and 114 IAM RoadSmart motorbike riders are being diverted onto country lanes, according to research by Online95.
DfT figures for 2024 reveal rural roads saw 60% of road deaths in Britain despite carrying 45% of traffic. "Every year, more people are killed on a rural road than any other road type, yet worryingly we," IAM RoadSmart director of policy Nicholas Lyes said.
Then-Prime minister Rishi Sunak cancelled all future smart motorway projects in April 2023 due to safety concerns. These roads, which boost capacity by converting the hard shoulder into a live lane, were rolled out from 2014.
Traffic growth shows little sign of abating, and without a commitment to increase capacity on the wider strategic network, more drivers risk filtering onto rural routes. This shift creates potentially grave consequences for road safety across the country.
