UK company profit warnings surge as Iran war drives up costs
EY said policy change and geopolitical uncertainty drove 54% of warnings as UK-listed firms faced rising costs and weaker demand.
EY-Parthenon reported that 65 UK-listed firms issued profit warnings in the quarter ending September, marking the highest level since late 2024 when 71 warnings were issued.
Geopolitical instability and policy shifts drove 54% of these warnings, while 38% of firms specifically cited fallout from the conflict in the Middle East.
Rising costs and inflationary pressures impacted 35% of warnings, with EY-Parthenon partner Jo Robinson noting that conditions reflect structural challenges rather than a conventional economic cycle.
Ahead of the autumn Budget, industry groups are urging Chancellor John Healey to avoid business tax hikes as firms navigate heightened regulatory uncertainty.
Over the past 12 months, 17% of UK-listed companies have issued at least one profit warning, demonstrating persistent difficulty maintaining stable financial guidance amid volatile conditions.
