UK Should Set Maximum Working Temperature Rules, Advisers Say
The Climate Change Committee says heat rules could protect workers as extreme heat becomes the UK’s biggest climate health risk.
The Climate Change Committee urged the Government to introduce maximum temperature regulations for workplaces to protect workers against worsening heatwaves, warning the "UK was built for a climate that no longer exists today."
Baroness Brown, chair of the Adaptation Committee, criticized the "woeful" performance of successive governments, noting that productivity "drops very significantly" during extreme heat, increasing accident risks.
More than 90% of existing homes could overheat during heatwaves, while climate change impacts already cost up to £60 billion annually; by 2050, water shortages could reach five billion litres daily.
Solutions include investing £1.6 billion annually in flood defences and installing cooling measures in hospitals and schools by 2035, while the committee urges targets to keep heat deaths at 2050 levels.
Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds stated the Government would "carefully consider" the latest recommendations, while noting that £2.65 billion has already been invested to repair and build flood defences.
