Canada Joins Allies in Expressing Regret over Postponed Palestinian Elections
Canada and three allies said the delay denies Palestinians a vote and urged Mahmoud Abbas to take steps toward credible elections.
On Tuesday, Canada and allies France, the United Kingdom, and Australia issued a statement urging Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to reverse his decision to postpone legislative and presidential elections until September 2027.
Mr. Abbas blamed Israel and the security situation for the postponement on Saturday, citing significant challenges and impediments to conducting elections in a manner consistent with international standards.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and her counterparts emphasized that credible elections are essential for Palestinian governance, noting it has been five years since the previous 2021 vote was postponed.
Prime Minister Mark Carney previously predicated Canada's recognition of the Palestinian state on "direct commitments to Canada and the international community" regarding reforms, including holding general elections in 2026.
Reiterating their long-standing position, allies stated that Hamas can have no role in future governance of Palestine while urging Israel to "refrain from actions that could impede the conduct of elections.
