Uganda Confirms Two More Ebola Cases, Taking Total to Seven

Two health workers and two Congolese nationals have tested positive as officials trace contacts and admit patients to a treatment unit.

  • On Monday, the Ugandan Ministry of Health reported two new confirmed Ebola cases in Kampala, bringing the national total to seven. Both patients are health workers receiving care at a designated treatment unit.
  • All cases are linked to the outbreak in the neighboring DRC, which began before authorities declared it on May 15. A 59-year-old Congolese man was admitted to a hospital in Kampala on May 11 and died three days later.
  • World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported on Sunday that suspected cases in the DRC have topped 900, including 101 confirmed instances. The organization declared the rare Bundibugyo strain a global health emergency.
  • President Yoweri Museveni has urged Ugandans to "stop shaking hands" as a preventive measure. The Ministry of Health is tracing contacts and urges citizens "to immediately report anyone presenting symptoms" to a health facility.
  • Authorities suspended public transportation and flights between the DRC and Uganda to contain the outbreak. Officials also postponed an annual religious event near Kampala that attracts thousands of pilgrims from the region.
