University of Georgia Student Survives Fall From Eighth-Floor Apartment Window
Athens-Clarke County police said the student was conscious and alert when help arrived, and her cause of fall remains unclear.
On Saturday, a 21-year-old University of Georgia student, Kristen Elizabeth Sargent, fell from an eighth-floor window at the Rambler on West Broad Street, sustaining serious injuries after landing in the courtyard below.
Athens-Clarke County Police reported the student was 'dancing on a couch near a window' when she fell through the screen onto the ground below.
A cushioned metal bench might have broken the 5-foot-7, 115-pound woman's fall; Sgt. Ellison confirmed the victim 'will survive' and that the initial investigation 'thus far suggests that this was an accident.'
Following the incident, Rambler Athens Apartments management reminded residents that windows are equipped with safety limiters and cautioned them not to tamper with or remove these devices.
Student Vash Sivasundar described the courtyard as having 'a very open concept' and expressed surprise that windows could open from such height, raising questions about complex design and safety.
