It has become common to see runners, after crossing the finish line, absorb the contents of a small plastic bottle. They contain ketone, a substance naturally produced by the body and used by the muscles during exercise in case of low glucose availability, but which can also be ingested as a dietary supplement. A scientific study published in 2016 claimed that ketones could improve recovery in endurance sports.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) wishes to clarify its position regarding the use of ketone supplements by cyclists. Ketones are chemical compounds naturally produced by the human body that are used by muscles during exercise when glucose is scarce.
