Florida Graduates Boo Commencement Speaker over AI Remarks
Students booed as Gloria Caulfield called artificial intelligence the next industrial revolution and said only a few years ago it was not a factor in daily life.
- On Friday, May 8, University of Central Florida graduates booed commencement speaker Gloria Caulfield, Vice President of Strategic Alliances at Tavistock Group, after she called artificial intelligence the "next industrial revolution."
- Graduates, many pursuing careers in arts and communication, disrupted the speech to demonstrate frustration over AI's potential to replace jobs. Attendees criticized the address as "tone-deaf" and "ad-like," with one student shouting "AI sucks" from the crowd.
- Houda Eletr, a graduate from the Nicholson School of Communication and Media, told Orlando Weekly the speech felt like an ad. Eletr said, "I'm embarrassed to have had to endure the most embarrassing, unskippable, tone-deaf, ad-like commencement. Boo to AI and boo to your agenda."
- Responding to the backlash, Caulfield initially labeled the disruption as "passion" while attempting to continue her address. She later stated on Instagram the ceremony was "an extraordinary evening" and she felt "humbled" to empower future leaders.
- The incident reflects broader economic anxiety among younger adults regarding the labor market. An AP-NORC poll from April found that eight in 10 adults under 35 describe the US economy as very or somewhat poor.
