NSF Suspends 18 UC Berkeley Grants Over Disclosure Concerns
The agency said researchers failed to disclose outside funding as it reviewed 18 projects ranging from plant gene editing to autonomous driving.
The National Science Foundation suspended nearly $21 million in research grants to Berkeley last month, charging principal investigators with failing to disclose foreign funding sources.
Federal regulations require scientists to disclose all foreign and domestic funding in their applications; the NSF identified 18 affected grants ranging from AI-fueled research to plant genetics, including one headed by a Nobel Laureate.
Although the NSF cited China in one instance, most affected projects involved traditional United States allies like the United Kingdom, Australia, and Switzerland rather than identified security threats.
Markita Landry, a Berkeley chemist, received a suspension notice while two-thirds through a $600,000 grant. University spokesperson Dan Mogulof declined specific comment but emphasized the University's commitment to compliance.
The White House is pushing to exert ideological control over campuses, proposing new rules this week granting political appointees greater influence over federal research grantmaking processes.
