Uber Cuts 10% Customer Service Jobs as AI Becomes Latest Driver of Tech Layoffs

  • On Wednesday, Uber laid off 10 percent of its customer service department to "simplify operations, strengthen in-person collaboration, and continue to embrace AI," a company spokesperson told Yahoo Finance.
  • The cuts mark Uber's second workforce reduction in two months, following a 23 percent reduction to its People and Places division in June, as the company acknowledged in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that AI adoption "may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce."
  • Uber's reductions fit a broader tech industry pattern, with Oracle cutting more than 25,000 employees this year and Amazon eliminating around 16,000 staff in January, according to analysis by TradingPlatforms.
  • AI firm Cognizant warned that such layoffs will accelerate, estimating 93 percent of jobs "could be impacted in some way" six years earlier than previously anticipated.
  • While AI dominates layoff narratives, Uber Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology Beth Galetti framed cuts as part of "strengthening our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy.
