Uber and WeRide Launch Driverless Robotaxis in Abu Dhabi
The robotaxi service operates without human drivers on Yas Island, with plans to expand to Abu Dhabi city center and Dubai, deploying over 150 vehicles in the region.
- On Wednesday, Uber rolled out fully driverless robotaxi rides in Abu Dhabi with WeRide, launching public service without a human safety operator on Yas Island.
- After supervised testing, WeRide and Uber began autonomous rides with a safety operator last December and secured a UAE federal permit about a month earlier to enable driverless service.
- Through the Uber app, users can select the Uber app's 'Autonomous' option or be matched via Uber Comfort or UberX, with on-board support and Tawasul Transport managing cleaning while WeRide handles vehicle testing.
- The companies plan to extend driverless services into Abu Dhabi city center and Dubai, aiming for rollouts in 15 additional cities over five years and deployment in at least 10 cities by the end of 2026.
- Strategically, the deployment advances Uber's broader plan, with the companies said to be the first driverless AV outside the U.S. or China, part of their global partnership network, Sarfraz Maredia said.
