UAE says tanker oil spill affects beaches in Umm Al Quwain
Technical teams are assessing the spill as residents report a strong fuel smell and officials say the odor poses no health risk.
The United Arab Emirates Ministry announced a tanker oil spill affecting beaches in Umm Quwain on Friday, immediately beginning containment and cleanup operations with local and federal authorities.
International maritime agencies identify the source as the Gem, a supertanker in the Arabian Gulf struck during a suspected Iranian drone attack on October 9-10.
Twenty-Two Indian sailors were rescued from the 330-metre Gem vessel following the attack, while residents across Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Quwain reported strong fuel odors since the incident.
Beaches and coastal areas in Umm Quwain remain temporarily closed until technical teams complete assessments, with fishermen urged to avoid fishing in affected zones.
Ongoing survey operations monitor the marine environment as concerns grow regarding the environmental impact of the Iran war on the Arabian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.
The Emirates temporarily closed the shores of Umm al-Quaywyn following an oil leak from a marine tanker, while the competent teams began containment and cleaning operations in the midst of official assurances that there were no health risks from the smells released.
