University of Michigan Shifts Funding From DEI Into Its Free Tuition Program, Go Blue Guarantee
The program now covers tuition and fees for 6,387 students as U-M redirects most DEI funding to financial aid and other student supports.
- The University of Michigan more than doubled financial aid this year through its Go Blue Guarantee, awarding an estimated $55.97 million to 6,387 students across Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses one year after shutting down its multimillion-dollar DEI initiative.
- U-M Board Chair Mark Bernstein said the millions invested in the DEI initiative "was refocused on the students, and the expansion of the Go Blue Guarantee is clearly a result of that refocus." Officials shifted the majority of DEI funding into student support programs.
- Nearly 70% more students participated this year—2,601 additional enrollees compared to 3,786 students awarded $26.25 million in 2025. Since U-M launched the program in 2018 as part of the DEI initiative, it has provided $223.8 million to 25,796 students.
- Beyond tuition, the university increased access to mental health services through its "Let's Talk" program and expanded the Blavin Scholars Program, which supports undergraduates from foster care or without parental support. It continues funding the Trotter Multicultural Center and Spectrum Center.
- Coverage for teacher preparation, nursing and social work students now includes housing costs, while the Wolverine Pathways program continues. U-M also provides 24/7 AI tutors and personal AI assistants to improve academic success across campus.
