- Prosecutors charged Zhang and Gao with conspiring to export solid minerals without lawful authority, violating the Miscellaneous Offences Act and depriving the Federal Government of revenue.
- After pleading guilty, the defendants faced Justice Akintayo Aluko, who mandated forfeiture of recovered mineral resources to the Federal Government and offered an option of a N50 million fine.
- EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that a third defendant named in the charges, Gao Pei Yu, remains at large following the convictions.
- This conviction follows earlier enforcement actions by Nigerian authorities against illegal mining; in 2023, the EFCC arrested 13 Chinese nationals for similar activities in Ilorin, Kwara State.
