Utah Canyon BASE Jump Kills 2, Including Extreme Athlete Who Performed with Madonna
Authorities said two jumpers died at the scene after a BASE jumping attempt, including extreme athlete Andy Lewis, who owned BASE Jump Moab.
Two people died Sunday during a BASE jumping attempt at Mineral Bottom, a remote desert area near Moab. The Grand County Sheriff identified one victim as extreme athlete and business owner Andy Lewis.
Lewis founded BASE Jump Moab, a business offering tandem excursions to inexperienced customers using a single parachute between jumpers. He openly acknowledged the sport's inherent danger despite its appeal.
Performing onstage with Madonna at the 2012 Super Bowl, Lewis executed slackline tricks while dressed in a Roman toga. He also set a Guinness World Record for slackline surfing above China's Diaoshuilou waterfall in 2011.
Emergency responders, including Grand County Search and Rescue and two Intermountain helicopters, responded to the scene. The Grand County Sheriff confirmed both men died from their injuries at the location.
