Passengers and Crew Break Ankles on BA Flight During Turbulence
A passenger and cabin crew member broke their ankles during 10-15 seconds of turbulence on a British Airways flight, despite seatbelt signs being on, the AAIB reported.
- On December 6, 2024, a British Airways flight from Los Angeles to London Heathrow hit turbulence, causing two people—a passenger and a cabin crew member—to suffer broken ankles, the AAIB reported.
- The captain had switched on the seatbelt signs after checking a live weather app, and the turbulence lasted 10–15 seconds over the Atlantic Ocean, south of Greenland.
- Onboard crew and two doctors treated the wounded after the injured passenger was thrown returning from the toilet, and the injured cabin crew member fell lowering her seat; cabin images showed overhead panel damage and debris.
- The captain weighed diversion to Canada or Iceland but proceeded to Heathrow, where ambulances met the Airbus A380 and transported three casualties to hospital, and a British Airways spokesman said safety is always the airline's priority.
- The AAIB concluded casualties could have been higher without the precautionary signs, noting seatbelt sign regulations require passengers to fasten seatbelts when illuminated.
