Two explosions hit cargo vessel in Gulf off Iraq, officials say
Authorities said the crew was unharmed and the fire was brought under control after a projectile and drone strike hit the vessel.
On Monday, a Panama-flagged container ship, MSC SARISKA V, was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Gulf approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr, Iraq, causing a large explosion.
Iraqi officials reported two explosions struck the vessel, with one blast resulting from a drone attack according to initial assessments, as investigators began reviewing the incident.
United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported the strike caused a significant breach on the vessel's starboard side and advised regional vessels to transit with caution.
Crews brought the fire under control following the strike, and authorities stated no group has claimed responsibility for the attack on the vessel.
Ongoing maritime insecurity in the Gulf reflects regional tensions between the United States and Iran, with multiple vessel incidents reported as diplomatic efforts continue.
