ALTON, ILLINOIS, AUG 7 – The helicopter struck power lines while installing marker balls, causing a crash and fire that killed two people; the Mississippi River was closed to commercial traffic, officials said.
- Thursday morning, a Hughes 369D helicopter crashed into a barge on the Mississippi River near East Alton, Illinois, killing two people.
- The helicopter was installing marker balls on power lines near the 200-mile marker when it hit a power wire and crashed into the barge.
- Amid thick smoke, the Alton Fire Department and a private tug boat doused flames as about a dozen agencies responded, officials said.
- Immediately following the collision, the Mississippi River was closed to navigation and the Lewis and Clark Bridge was shut to traffic, officials said, with an investigator arriving Friday.
