Man and woman arrested by counter terror police over arson attack on former synagogue in East London
Police said the fire was started intentionally and caused minor damage as investigations continue into a series of attacks on Jewish sites.
Counter-Terror police arrested a 45-year-old man and 52-year-old woman on Sunday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson at the former East London Central Synagogue in Whitechapel.
CCTV inquiries indicated the fire was started intentionally at 5:16 am on Tuesday at Nelson Street, marking the latest in a series of arson attacks on Jewish sites in London since late March.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of CTP London, described the arrests as a "significant step," noting that 33 people have been arrested across various investigations linked to recent attacks on Jewish, Israeli, and Iranian sites.
Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter, who leads policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, noted the synagogue was being sold to a local Somali Muslim organization and emphasized that communities of all faiths condemn this "horrendous act."
The Metropolitan Police announced this week a new dedicated Community Protection Team of 100 extra officers to provide visible, intelligence-led presence protecting Jewish communities across London, as protesters rallied against antisemitism at Downing Street on Sunday.
