Twins prepare to make highest draft pick in years
The Twins are weighing three top prospects while running mock drafts and roster moves ahead of a pick that could shape the franchise.
The Twins enter today's draft holding the third overall pick, their highest selection since Royce Lewis. Assistant general manager Sean Johnson and his scouting department have finalized their strategy at Target Field.
Analysts consider UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, prep standout Grady Emerson, and Georgia Tech catcher Vahn Lackey the draft's top three prospects. If the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays select two, the Twins will choose the remaining player.
Friday, the Twins acquired 35-year-old right-handed reliever Tommy Nance from the Toronto Blue Jays to address roster needs. The club sent minor league catcher Ryan Sprock to Toronto in the swap, which included international bonus pool money.
Catcher Ryan Jeffers returned to the lineup Friday after missing nearly two months with a hamate bone fracture. Manager Derek Shelton activated Jeffers ahead of the series against the Los Angeles Angels, keeping three catchers on the active roster.
While attention surrounds the third pick, the club's focus extends through round 20 on Sunday. Johnson noted the internal intensity, stating, "I haven't woke up one day going, 'Man, we just got it easy this year. This is a piece of cake.
