Twelve killed, nine injured in Johannesburg shooting, South African police say
Police said more than 10 suspects opened fire in a Cleveland settlement, killing 12 people and wounding nine before fleeing.
At least 12 people were killed and nine wounded on Tuesday in a mass shooting in the Cleveland suburb of Johannesburg, South African police said Wednesday.
Police believe more than 10 suspects were dropped off in a white Toyota Quantum late Tuesday night in an Informal settlement, entering from two access points before opening fire.
Eleven victims died at the scene and the 12th died in the hospital; the nine males and three females were identified by police.
Police launched a manhunt for more than 10 suspects following the attack; the motive remained unclear as of Wednesday.
Cleveland, an industrial suburb established in 1903 and named after Cleveland, Ohio, is home to about 2,300 people. Reuters reported South Africa averages about 60 killings daily.
