TV licence fee to rise by £5.50 to £180 from April
The BBC licence fee will rise by £5.50 to £180 from April, with annual inflation-linked increases continuing until 2027, supporting the broadcaster’s financial stability, government said.
- A Department for Culture, Media and Sport confirmed a £5.50 increase will take effect from April 1, 2026, raising the annual colour TV licence to £180.
- DCMS said the rise follows the annualised CPI from October to September, justified by a 3.14% uplift and in line with the 2022 Licence Fee Settlement.
- Revenue figures show the licence remains the BBC's main funding source, with 3.8bn collected from 23m TV licences in 2024/25 and about 550m lost through evasion.
- To support households, DCMS will continue the Simple Payment Plan and concessions, as it said the rise gives the BBC stable footing to deliver for audiences and creative industries.
- April 2027 will see another CPI-linked increase as the government consults on post-2027 funding and the Royal Charter renewal, with reports suggesting enforcement could link 40 million online BBC accounts to home addresses.
