Turkey, US will find way of removing CAATSA sanctions 'very soon', Turkish FM says
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said NATO allies are working on removing CAATSA sanctions imposed in 2020 after Turkey acquired Russian S-400 systems.
- Hakan Fidan told Reuters on Saturday that Turkey and the United States would find a way to remove U.S. CAATSA sanctions very soon, and NATO allies had started working on the issue.
- Turkey says the 2020 measures were unjust, noting Washington removed Ankara from the F-35 programme after it acquired Russian S-400 air defence systems and hoped the issue could be resolved during President Donald Trump's second term.
- Fidan praised U.S. mediation, saying officials were `on the right path` and urged negotiating parties in the Ukraine conflict to stay at the table while repeating Turkey's offer to host talks.
- Fidan said Washington's initial 28-point plan was only a 'starting point' and is now evolving, warning that failure to advance the ceasefire would be a 'huge failure' for the world and Washington.
- Fidan said a credible Palestinian civil administration and a vetted, trained police force should be in place to allow Hamas to disarm, excluding Hamas members and backed by an international stabilisation force, adding Washington was pressing Israel over Turkey's bid to join the force.
