- After its 2019 removal from the U.S.-led F-35 program, Turkey faced U.S. officials citing security risks linked to its purchase of Russian-made S-400 missile defense systems.
- In July, Ankara and London reached a preliminary deal for Eurofighter Typhoons from the Eurofighter consortium, and reports show Turkey is also seeking secondhand jets during Erdogan's three-day tour of Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.
- As an immediate effect, Turkey is buying jets as a stopgap to strengthen its fleet pending the KAAN fighter jet, while President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised reentry into the F-35 program with U.S. President Donald Trump last month.
- Officials plan a transitional 120-jet fleet including 40 Eurofighters, 40 F-16s and 40 F-35s as an interim measure until the KAAN fighter enters service in 2028 at the earliest.
